African House Types Research Proposal
In 1971 I received a sabbatical leave to research African house types at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. This was to be a major project in which I studied the origins and diffusion of the many different house types that were described in the reports of anthropologists, geographers, and travelers in Africa through the 1960s. Here I include the research proposal, the report of the year’s study, and copies of some of the conclusions. However, upon returning to Oregon, both I and the world had changed. I now thought that I needed to direct my research to studying the Earth’s rapidly changing environmental condition. And I did so both locally and worldwide. As a result the hundred or so pages of research that I had produced on my sabbatical were only used for several lectures. Here I include the summary maps and categories of my archival and library research. The more detailed sketches, like the two pages I reproduce here, remain in my files. The bibliographic cards that support these pages have been lost during the four moves that I have made since retiring.
I some ways I consider this period a divide in my teaching and research. I continued to teach cultural and regional geography in my introductory courses; but came to emphasize environmental studies in all subsequent work.
